CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers vollyball team showed no signs of rust from last weekend's layoff Tuesday, matching their best start in five years and sweeping Charleston Southern, 3-0, at Halton Arena.
Kathleen Ramos led Charlotte in kills for the third match in a row with 16. She also posted her fifth double-double with 11 digs. Molly McDonald also had a big night for the Niners, coming off the bench to record 30 assists and knock down her first two career kills.
The 49ers made quick work of Charleston Southern (2-4) in game one, winning 30-17. Charlotte went to their bench early in the second game. After playing even with the Bucs early in the game, the Niners settled down to earn a 30-23 victory. By the third game, Charlotte's subs were working together well, clinching the match with a 30-15 win.
The win pushed the 49ers' record to 6-2, their best start since 1996, when the team began the year 6-2 and eventually went 8-2 to open the season.
Charlotte opens their conference season this Friday, hosting Cincinnati at 7:00. Then, on Saturday, the 49ers take on defending Conference USA champion Louisville at 7:00. Both matches will be played at Halton Arena. Admission is $3 for adults, while youth 17-and-under and Charlotte students are admitted free.
