Charlotte Drops First Match of Gopher Invitational in Minnesota

Minneapolis, Minn. - The Minnesota volleyball team (5-3) defeated Charlotte (8-3) in three games by scores of 30-16, 30-18, 30-20 in its first match of the Gopher Invitational at the Sports Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 14.
In the first game, Minnesota ran out to a 7-1 lead due in large part to a three kills and a solo block by Roehrig. Charlotte answered with four of the next points to cut the Golden Gopher lead to 8-5. Minnesota answered with a 6-0 run to go up 14-5. Charlotte answered with back-to-back points to cut it to 14-7, but the Golden Gophers responded three consecutive points of their own and moved ahead 17-7 on a Dieter kill.
The 49ers cut the Golden Gophers lead to 18-10, but Dieter answered with a kill and a service ace to push the lead out to 20-10. Roehrig followed with a kill to make it 21-10. The teams exchanged the next eight points to push the score to 25-14. After a 49er point, Dieter pushed it to 27-15 with consecutive kills. Roysland delivered a service ace, and Dieter followed with a kill to make it game point at 29-15. Charlotte fought off the first Golden Gopher game point, but Gibbemeyer delivered a kill to give Minnesota game one.
Minnesota outhit Charlotte .452 to .000 in the game, and had 18 kills to eight for the Golden Gophers. Dieter hit .636 (8-1-11) with eight kills in the first game.
The two teams had five ties in the first 20 points and found themselves locked up at 10. Minnesota pulled away with seven of the next eight points to go ahead 17-11. After a Charlotte point, the Golden Gophers responded with back-to-back points to go up 19-12. The 49ers followed with back-to-back points to make it 19-14.
Minnesota responded with three straight points, paced by back-to-back kills by Dieter to go up 22-14. The Golden Gophers went up 23-15, but Charlotte answered with back-to-back points to make it 23-17. Gibbemeyer and Rachelle Hagerty (Defiance, Ohio) sandwiched kills around a Charlotte attack error to make it 26-17. After a 49er points, Minnesota rattled off the next three points to make it game point at 29-18. Hagerty finished off game two with a kill to put the Golden Gophers up 2-0 in the match.

In the game, Minnesota outhit Charlotte .500 to .033, and had 17 kills to nine for the 49ers. Dieter led the way with six kills in the game.
Minnesota started off game three on an 8-1 run, paced by Dieter's five kills in the Golden Gophers' first seven points of the game. Charlotte scored four of the next five points to cut the Minnesota lead to 9-5. The Golden Gophers answered with six of the next eight points to move ahead 15-7. The 49ers scored three of the next four points to cut the lead down to 16-10.
The Golden Gophers responded with six of the next eight points to move ahead 22-12. Minnesota scored the next two points, and went ahead 24-12 on a Roehrig kill. Charlotte responded with seven of the next nine points to trim the Golden Gopher lead to 26-19. The Golden Gophers scored four of the final five points to close out the match.
Charlotte was led by Alma Arroyo who had eight kills and six digs. Eden Ramos finished with 20 assists, eight digs and five kills, while Carly Romberg had a match-high 12 digs.
Minnesota will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15 when it plays Wisconsin-Green Bay at 12:30 p.m. and Creighton at 7:30 p.m. Creighton will face Charlotte in the first match of the day at 10 a.m. Wisconsin-Green Bay and Charlotte will meet each other in the first match of the second session at 5 p.m.
