CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Oregon State made use of a .315 hitting percentage for the match to defeat the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team, 3-2, and win the SpringHill Suites Classic, Saturday night at Halton Arena.
Karah Rhoades paced Oregon State (9-2) with 18 points. She finished the match with 17 kills and a service ace. Three other players scored in double figures for the Beavers with each earning all-tournament honors. Amanda Eggert accounted for 16 points on 11 kills and five solo blocks. Allison Lawrence had 14 points and Abby Windell scored 13.5 points.
Charlotte (5-5) also placed three on the all-tournament team. Lisa Newell led her team with 16 points, finishing the night with 13 kills, two service aces and one solo block. Abbey Szlanfucht also got the all-tourney nod with 15 points in the final match, posting 14 kills and a solo block. Holly Kreyling picked up the third spot for the Niners as the libero. She finished the weekend with 37 digs, including 16 Saturday night.
It looked as if the Beavers were going to dominate the 49ers like they had their other two opponents early in the match, cruising to a 30-17 win in game one. Charlotte responded in game two, however, bouncing back to even things up with a 30-28 win in game two. Hopes of rallying to pick up the win faded in the the final two games as Oregon State hit .429 in the third and fourth games combined to win 30-22 and 30-16 to clinch the match.
The Niners hit the road for the better part of the next two weeks. Charlotte plays at North Carolina, Tuesday night, before playing three matches at the Minnesota Invitational, next weekend.
