Charlotte Wins Invitational in 3-1 Victory Over North Florida

Niners Remain Unbeaten at Home and Sweep Tournament Field

Sept. 9, 2006

Charlotte, N.C. - Outside hitter Cori Dayton took MVP honors as she led the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team to a 3-1 victory (31-29, 33-31, 22-30, 30-19) over the visiting North Florida Ospreys at Halton Arena Saturday night. The win pushes Charlotte to 7-3, including a perfect 6-0 at home on the season. North Florida drops to 6-4, but went 2-1 for the weekend. The victory earned Charlotte the tournament championship, as the Niners swept Penn, East Carolina and the Ospreys in the weekend.

Alma Arroyo paced the squad in the UNF match with 22 kills, while libero Carly Romberg had the match-high 30 digs. Junior setter Eden Ramos had a tournament-high 62 assists in the finale. Romberg and middle Lynae Mulder were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Ospreys played the Niners tough for three games. The largest lead in the first two games was three as the teams battled back and forth, sending both of the first two games to extra points. Charlotte was not able to take control of either of those first two frames until the end. After intermission, each team put together a runaway game.

The Ospreys started 5-0 over Charlotte in the third, and extended that margin to 18-8 before Charlotte responded. The Niners cut the margin back to five at 23-18, but got no closer in the rout. North Florida's Maegan Weisert led all attackers with seven kills in game three.

Charlotte answered with a blowout game in the fourth frame. Charlotte opened to a 13-7 lead and widened the gap to 10 at 24-14. Senior Jessica Oldenburg had a game-high six kills in the final game.

Weisert also made All-Tournament team, along with teammate Amy Stroder. The pair had 22 and 15 kills, respectively. Setter Jenna Thomas had 49 assists and 19 digs against Charlotte. The Ospreys defense was tough, netting 11 blocks and keeping the match close against Charlotte hitters.

The 49ers head back on the road this week, with a Tuesday night match at Davidson at 7 p.m. before heading to Alabama for a weekend tournament at Samford.
