Led by 16 kills from Kim Blackwell, Eastern Illinois defeated Charlotte, 3-1, to win the Charlotte Invitational Saturday night at Halton Arena.
The 49ers took a 1-0 lead in the match after winning game one 15-13. Christy Galvin led the Niners' attack with five of her match-high 21 kills. The Panthers bounced back to take game two, 15-7, hitting .327 with 22 kills and just five errors. Eastern Illinois went on to pull out wins in the third and fourth games by scores of 15-11 and 16-14, respectively. Carrie Stevens also had a big night for Eastern Illinois with 14 kills to earn tournament MVP honors.
Ozlem Ozkan Ayture and Esra Akgun earned all-tournament honors for the 49ers. Ayture registered 10 kills in three matches and set up 63 more to go along with 14 digs. Akgun knocked down 28 kills and had 15 digs for Charlotte.
