Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte played its second five-game match of the day, outlasting a surging UNC Greensboro team to take the team title at the Comfort Suites 49er Volleyball Tournament Saturday night 3-2 (30-22, 30-21, 23-30, 25-30, 15-12) in Halton Arena. Charlotte won all three matches this weekend to take the team title. The Niners improve to 5-1 at home this season, 7-2 overall on the season. The Spartans drop to 6-6 this year.
As a team, the Niners recorded a season-high 12 blocks on the season. Senior outside hitter Cori Dayton had a career-high four blocks in the match, while the young tandem of Jenn Webb and Kat Hicks added 11 kills each in a balanced attack. Carly Romberg, fresh off her career-high 31 digs in the afternoon match, recorded 25 digs in the evening affair.
"We showed more balance in this match and that's something we've been working on as our younger players continue to contribute," said Niners head coach Chris Redding.
The Niners befuddled the Spartans in the first two games, holding the visitors to less than a .150 hitting percentage in each game. The Spartans were able to reverse their fortune in games three and four, holding Charlotte to less than a .060 attack percentage in those frames.
In the tie-breaking fifth game, Charlotte hit .400 as a team and held UNCG to .077 to run away with the late win.
"After two weekends at home in the first three, we realized that we really love playing in this gym," said Redding. "We feed off of the energy in here and get into it."
Charlotte senior outside hitter Alma Arroyo was a kill away from a double-double with nine kills and 14 digs. Senior setter Eden Ramos added 14 digs to her 40 assists.
Greensboro's Kaitlyn Nortz tied Dayton with the match-high of 16 kills. Spartans liberro Catherine Hanners led all players with 29 digs and setter Lisa Fawell led all players with 43 assists.
