Charlotte Pushed to the Brink in Win over Morgan State

Sept. 8, 2007

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - After dropping games one and two Saturday afternoon, the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team took the final three to win their early match over Morgan State 3-2 (29-31, 27-30, 30-26, 30-22, 15-9) in the Comfort Suites 49ers Tournament in Halton Arena. Charlotte improves to 6-2, while dropping the Bears to 0-6 this season.

Senior Eden Ramos dished out a career-high 73 assists and junior Carly Romberg recorded a career-best 31 digs in the match. Senior Alma Arroyo continued her hot hitting streak, belting 28 kills, one short of her career-high mark.

Morgan State, which lost in similar fashion last night to UNC Greensboro, gutted out a pair of close opening games. The largest lead of the opening frame was five points with Charlotte up 14-9, but MSU scored five straight to tie and neither team could get more than a three point lead to the end, which took an extra point by the Bears to win. Esther Johnson was the match leader with six kills after game one.

Game two was much of the same, with Johnson leading the way with seven kills in the game. Charlotte again jumped out to an early lead at 13-9, only to watch MSU tie it at 13. Morgan State then stretched to a four-point lead and the teams traded points to the MSU three-point win.

That's when the Niners took over. Arroyo put down eight kills in the third, as Charlotte held the Bears to a .143 attack percentage in the game. The momentum spilled over into game four, with Charlotte starting out to a 5-0 lead. Morgan State did manage to work the game to a tie at 6-6, and the two teams traded points until Charlotte went on a big run at 20-all. The Niners scored 10 of the games last 12 points to force the tiebreaker.

Arroyo added five more kills in the final game, with fellow senior Cori Dayton adding a pair of kills to get the 15-6 final game win.

"We were sluggish early on," said Niners head coach Chris Redding. "When we play with non-stop intensity, we showed that we can be a successful team."

Four 49ers had double-digit kills. Dayton finished with 20 and redshirt freshman Kat Hicks added 16, with sophomore Jenn Webb registering 13. Five Niners has 11 or more digs. Arroyo and Dayton had 15 each to record double-doubles. Junior Courtney Cowles had 17 and Ramos added 11 on the afternoon.

Johnson led the Bears with 20 kills, with Ivanti Bush adding 12 and Jeniqua Moran netting 10. MSU setter Jentri Fullove had 37 assists in the match. Bush added 21 digs and liberro Ashley Preston recorded 20. MSU out blocked Charlotte 10-4.

MSU takes to the court again at 4:30, after a short turnaround against Coastal Carolina. Charlotte plays again tonight at 7 p.m. versus UNC Greensboro.
