AUBURN, Ala. - Playing in the shadows Jordan-Hare Stadium and the Auburn-Ole Miss football game apparently energized the Charlotte volleyball team as the 49ers took Syracuse behind the woodshed, defeating the Orangewomen, 3-0, Saturday night at the War Eagle Invitational.
Charlotte (4-2) won in convincing fashion, led by 12 kills and 13 digs from Kathleen Ramos. Syracuse (3-3) was led by Laura Koster, who finished with eight kills.
The Orangewomen looked ready to battle early taking an early lead in game one. The 49ers kept their composure, however, and tied the game, 24-24, on a Holly Kreyling service ace. Charlotte took the lead for good a short time later, 26-25, on a Jessica Kelly kill and went on to win the game, 30-25. The Niners kept the momentum in the second game, taking a 4-0 lead, which they eventually turned into a 10-point margin, on the way to a 30-21 win. Charlotte delivered the knockout punch in the third game, cruising to a 30-15 win to clinch the match.
The 49ers wrap up their stay in Alabama Sunday, when they take on tourney host Auburn at 2:00. The Tigers are 2-0 this weekend with wins over Jacksonville on Friday and Syracuse on Saturday.
