CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers' volleyball team picked up its first win of the season in its first home match of the season, sweeping Villanova, 3-0, at the Charlotte Invitational Friday night.

The 49ers played the Wildcats close in the first game before pulling away to earn the 15-10 win. Esra Akgun led Charlotte to win with five of her match-high nine kills. Games two and three went smoother for the Niners, winning both by a 15-5 count. In the second game, Charlotte dropped in a trio of service aces, including a pair from Courtney Burg. Christy Galvin and Jessica Kelly each had three kills in game three to help the 49ers clinch the match.

Earlier in the evening, Eastern Illinois defeated High Point, 3-0. Game scores were 15-9, 15-8 and 15-6. Kim Blackwell led her team to the win with eight kills. Amy Heimann and Leslie Przekwas also provided solid efforts for Eastern Illinois, recording seven kills each.

The Charlotte Invitational resumes tomorrow at 11:00 with Villanova and Eastern Illinois. Charlotte plays High Point in the second game at 1:30. High Point and Villanova square off at 4:30. The 49ers close out the tournament with Eastern Illinois at 7:00.
