Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers improved to 3-1 at home with a three-game sweep of Coastal Carolina 30-24, 30-22, 31-29 at the Comfort Suites 49ers Tournament Friday night at Halton Arena. Senior outside hitters Cori Dayton and Alma Arroyo both recorded double-doubles in the effort. Charlotte improves to 5-2 overall, dropping CCU to 2-6 on the young season.
Charlotte gave up the first point of game one, and only trailed once more at 19-18. Alma Arroyo then served seven straight times, including back-to-back aces, and Charlotte cruised to the opening game victory.
In game two, Coastal again scored the first point, but Charlotte tied it at one and never relinquished the lead again. Arroyo hit .500 in the second frame, netting six kills, while the Niners held CCU to a negative attack percentage (-.062) in that game.
Game three was a back and forth duel in which the Chanticleers showed a balanced attack. Coastal's pair of Megan Bickford and Nakia Thompson hit better than .600 in the final game, and four players had three or more kills for the visitors. Arroyo again had six kills, with Dayton adding four and redshirt freshman Kat Hicks contributing three. Hicks was the attack-percentage leader for Charlotte in game three, at a .400 clip. Charlotte held a 28-26 edge, but the scrappy Chanticleers scored twice to tie and traded a point with the Niners, before Charlotte could score the required two-point margin to ice the match.
Arroyo had the match-high 16 kills and added 12 digs, with Dayton recording 14 kills and 15 digs. Senior setter Eden Ramos had 39 assists.
The opposing liberro players, Charlotte's Carly Romberg and Coastal's Brett Starbuck, matched jersey numbers (14) and the match-best 18 digs each.
