Charlotte Comes Up Short Versus Campbell

Charlotte dominated in games one and four, but Campbell caught just enough breaks to win the other three games and beat the 49ers, 3-2, Saturday.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Charlotte dominated games one and four, but Campbell caught just enough breaks to win the other three games and beat the 49ers, 3-2, Saturday at the Deacon Invitational.

Charlotte took control early in the first game, taking a 6-0 lead on a kill from Esra Akgun. Campbell rallied to pull within a point of the 49ers at 7-6. The Niners dug in at that point and went on score eight of the next 10 points to win game one, 15-8.

Both teams played even for most of games two and three. Christy Galvin had nine of her team-best 21 kills for Charlotte in the second game, but the Camels hung on for the 15-13 win. Game three produced the same result, with Campbell finishing on top 15-11.

The 49ers collected themselves for game four, jumping out to a 10-0 lead before the Camels scored a point. Akgun gave Charlotte the 15-7 win and forced a fifth game with one of her 17 kills.

In the fifth game, Campbell pulled ahead early, but Charlotte battled back to take an 8-6 lead on a Camels attack error. From there, Campbell scored three straight points and held on to earn the 15-11 win and clinch the match.

Setter Ozlem Ozkan Ayture, who posted a triple double with 11 kills, 41 assists and 13 digs against Campbell, was named to the all-tournament team.
