Charleston, S.C. - Charlotte senior outside hitter Alma Arroyo eclipsed the 1,000-kill mark and led Charlotte to a three-game sweep of Winthrop (30-24, 30-24, 30-28) Saturday morning at the Holiday Inn Classic in Charleston. Charlotte improves to 4-1 on the season while Winthop falls to 1-4.
Arroyo, who now has 1,011 career kills, got four kills in the first game to reach the plateau. She is the 14th player in Charlotte volleyball history to reach the mark. Arroyo had a match high 15 kills with fellow senior Cori Dayton adding 14 to the total. Both recorded double-doubles with Arroyo adding 11 digs to Dayton's 12. Arroyo leads the team in that category with four, with Dayton right behind at three. As a team, Charlotte had a .231 attack percentage. Sophomore Jenn Webb added a solo block and assisted in two more as Charlotte blocked a season-high nine attempts. Eden Ramos had a match high 39 assists.
Winthrop's offense was led by Shannon Sitzmann who completed 12 of 22 digs for a .500 attack percentage. The offense was supported by service aces from Kelsey Hall, Tara Toepke, and Pohai Nu'uhiwa. Toepke added nine kills with 15 digs for the day.
The final match of two- day tournament will begin at 7:30 when Charleston hosts Charlotte.
