WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers' volleyball team didn't begin the new season the way it had hoped, falling to Wake Forest, 3-0, Friday night at Reynolds Gymnasium.
Wake Forest took advantage of Charlotte's mistakes in the first game, picking up a 15-3 win. The 49ers had 15 kills compared to 13 errors in the first game.
The 49ers appeared to shake off their first-match jitters in the second game. Down by two at 7-5, Charlotte scored nine straight to take a 14-7 lead on a kill from Christy Galvin. Wake Forest battled back, however, and tied the game at 14-all. The Niners took a 15-14 lead on an assisted block from Lexy Pool and Esra Akgun, but could earn the game point. The Deacons re-tied the game then picked up the 17-15 win.
Wake Forest carried the momentum into the third game, jumping out to an 11-0 lead. Charlotte slowed the Deacons barrage, scoring two on a kill and service ace from Akgun, but eventually fell 15-2.
Charlotte plays Northern Arizona Saturday at 11:00 in the second round of the Demon Deacon Invitatonal. Earlier on Friday, Northern Arizona swept Campbell 15-9, 15-2, 15-10.
