CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Head volleyball coach Lisa Marston notched her 100th career win Friday as her 49ers defeated Providence, 3-2, in the first round of the Charlotte Invitational.
Charlotte earned the win for their coach, pulling out a 16-14 victory in the fifth game. Kathleen Ramos posted a double-double with 19 kills and 12 digs to lead the 49ers. Courtney Burg also came up big in the match with 17 kills.
The Niners began the match strong with a decisive 30-19 win in game one. Providence fought Charlotte the rest of the way, winning games two and four, 31-29 and 33-31, respectively. The 49ers earned the win in game three, 30-22, before clinching the victory in game five.
The Niners didn't fair as well in the nightcap, falling to Virginia Commonwealth, 3-1. Burg had 17 kills for the second straight match, while Esra Akgun had 10.
All four games against the Rams went down to the wire. VCU and Charlotte traded wins in the first two games with the Rams winning game one, 30-26, and the 49ers winning game two, 30-28. VCU hung on to win the final two games, however, 30-24 and 30-23.
The volleyball team returns to action tomorrow with a pair of matches at Halton Arena. They take on Middle Tennessee State at 1:00 followed by Kansas at 7:30. An all-day ticket is $3 for adults. Youth 17-and-under and Charlotte students will be admitted free.
