Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team was pushed to five games for the second straight night, but came through in game five on Saturday to get the 3-2 win over Appalachian State (26-30, 30-25, 30-15, 21-30, 15-6) to end the Comfort Suites Charlotte Invitational. The Niners improve to 2-1, dropping ASU to 1-2.
Charlotte led only once in the first game, at 3-2. The Mountaineers hit .344 in the first game, holding Charlotte to a negative percentage in the opening frame. ASU's Carla Durham had three of her match-high six block assists in the first game to help ASU out to the fast start.
Game two was a different story, as Charlotte held the Mountaineers to a hitting percentage of .089, forcing 11 attack errors on the visitors. Charlotte started slow, trailing 9-4 early in the match, but surged ahead at 12-11 and never relinquished the lead in that game. Junior liberro Carly Romberg had seven of her match-high 20 digs in the second game.
Charlotte made game three into an impressive display, hitting .433 with no attack errors and four service errors. Senior outside hitter Cori Dayton served for six straight points, from 16-13 to 22-13 as the Niners ran away with the middle game.
Game four was hotly contested until the 18-18 mark, when Appalachian State put together a 12-3 run to for the deciding game.
Charlotte took it going away, hitting .533 in the clincher, holding ASU to a zero attack percentage. Friday night, Charlotte hit a negative percentage in game five and lost to Eastern Michigan 15-6 in the final frame.
Dayton led the Niners with 19 kills, but was a dig shy of her third double-double. Senior outside hitter Alma Arroyo did capture her third straight with 12 kills and 15 digs. Senior Eden Ramos distributed 47 assists for the match.

Zahn, Dayton and Arroyo were awarded All-Tournament Honors. Also making the list were Presbyterian's Lauren Mason and Eastern Michigan's Jill Wolosiansky and Becky Reenders, with EMU's Kate Sulewski earning Most Valuable Player honors.
Charlotte heads to Charleston to compete in the College of Charleston Invitational. The Niners face Illinois-Chicago on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. to begin the weekend.
