Defending A-10 Indoor Champions Kick Off Season This Weekend

Men's and Women's Teams Travel to Clemson Opener and Appalachian State

Nov. 27, 2007

Charlotte, N.C. - Behind the leadership of 2007 Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year Bob Olesen, the Charlotte 49ers men's and women's track teams commence the indoor season this weekend at the concurrent Clemson Opener and Appalachian State Indoor Meet. The teams were predicted to finish second and first on the men's and women's sides, respectively, of the Atlantic 10 in the preseason coaches poll.

"These early meets allow us to evaluate the fall training period," Olesen said. "This is just a way for the athletes, before they go home for the winter break, to get some feedback on how their training has gone and also to give us some feedback. The results will hopefully motivate them to continue training over the break."

The men's team, who finished third in the conference last season, returns senior sprinter Jason Moore, who took the 55-meter dash title in the 2007 Indoor Championships and took second place in the 200-meter, and junior distance runner Chase Eckard, named Most Outstanding Performer last season, to the roster.

The women's team, looking to defend its 2007 Indoor title for the three-peat, will miss the presence of Most Outstanding Track Performer (2006 and 2007) Shareese Woods, but returns junior sprinter Lamarra Currie, junior distance runner Aja Jackson and junior hurdler and long jumper Pat Springs, each who posted outstanding finishes at last year's event.

Last season, the 49ers also participated in the two meets, as returners senior high jumper Jelaine Sellers, junior thrower Jarryd Novotni and Moore posted strong performances at Clemson, while junior sprinter Toree Roseboro and sophomore pole vaulter Sam Hodapp placed in the top five in their respective events at Appalachian State.
