Charlotte, N.C. – Charlotte’s track and field squad took time out from preparing for the upcoming indoor season by heading to Nevin Park on Friday afternoon to take part in the Hearts:Hands Playground Build.
As part of an initiative from the entire 49er athletic department, the track and field team took a large portion of their Friday afternoon to help makes the experience of growing up a lot brighter for the children in the greater Charlotte area by helping build the Race Playce playground for kids of all ages.
Charlotte’s throwers moved an incredible five dump truck loads of gravel around the playground by shovel and wheelbarrow.
“Along with the throwers were a few sprinters, a couple hurdlers, and one distance runner that earned honorary thrower status. Their prize is a trip to an all you can eat buffet on an away trip,” commented Fitzpatrick, rather candidly, about the effort from the entire track team.
With a team fielding over 100 athletes, the track team simply being there was able to create an impact on the event, which the coaching staff felt was an incredibly positive experience for the athletes.
“I think it was great for the team to have an opportunity to give back to the community, it also was a good team building activity for us to work together. I feel that schools need to do more things like this to let the communities know that we care,” said Associate Head Coach Timothy Vaught.
Charlotte’s track and field team will be in action starting in November as they look to defend their three conference team championships they earned last season.
