Four 49ers on USTFCCCA All-Academic Track Teams

Sunquist joined by Ficken, Johnson and Currie on men's and women's squads for 2005-06

July 13, 2006

Metairie, La. - Eli Sunquist, Lamarra Currie, Cassie Ficken and Sharonda Johnson have all been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) Division I All-Academic Team.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, an athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and must have met the NCAA Division I regional or national qualifying standard in his or her event.

Both Ficken and Johnson were Second Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans this year, while Ficken was the Atlantic 10 Conference Track & Field Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Both were on the A-10 Track & Field All-Academic Team as well.

Ficken and Currie both competed at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento this year. Johnson and Sunquist both competed at the NCAA East Regional Championships in the triple jump.

Ficken closed out her collegiate career with a 13th-place finish in the 5,000-meter run, advancing to the Championship race.

Currie ran on Charlotte's 13th-place 4x100-meter relay team. The team placed fifth in the 4x1 at the NCAA East Regional Championships to advance to the national competition. She was also 17th in the 100-meter dash at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis.

Johnson, in her first season returning from a year-long layoff due to knee surgery, posted a season-best distance at the Regional meet and finished 11th. She was considered in the at-large pool of candidates for the NCAA Championships.

Sunquist was 20th in the men's triple jump at the Region meet. He finished third at the A-10 Championships.

All four of these All-Academic competitors helped the 49ers to a sweep of the men's and women's team titles in the Atlantic 10 Conference this season.
