WALTHAM, Mass. - The Charlotte 49ers track and field team's Sharonda Johnson has been named third-team Academic All-America by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors Association. She owns a 3.867 grade-point average in chemistry.
It is the second All-America honor this month for Johnson, a sophomore from Raleigh, N.C. Two weeks ago at Texas, she earned All-America honors for the triple jump at the NCAA Track and Field Championships. She finished 11th overall with a distance of 42-1.5 to become the second member of the women's team to ever earn All-America accolades.
Johnson has also added a pair of Conference USA championships to her resume this season. At the indoor championships, she broke the meet record with a distance of 42-11. She made it two wins in a row at the outdoor championships with her second-straight title.
She is one of two sophomores to earn a spot on CoSIDA's Academic All-America team.
Johnson is the second Charlotte 49ers student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors this school year. Lindsay Duncan of the women's soccer team earned Academic All-America notice in the fall.
