NCAA Announces Six 49ers in Field at Next Week's National Championships

Charlotte sends second-highest number of athletes in program history to nationals

June 4, 2008

2008 National Championship Team Breakdown

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers outdoor track & field teams grabbed a trio of at-large entries en route to sending six student-athletes to the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships next week, officials announced Tuesday afternoon. The six entries mark the second-highest season total of NCAA Championship athletes in program history.

Making her second outdoor championship appearance, junior Lamarra Currie, the 2008 Atlantic 10 Women's Outdoor Track Performer of the Year, and senior Courtney Patterson lead the way for the 49ers with two bids apiece. All-Region selection Currie qualified individually for the 100m with an automatic bid time of 11.72 (-1.6 wind) for a fifth-place finish.  Patterson will also contest in the 100m after grabbing an at-large bid with a 11.65 (-0.3 wind) showing.

In addition to their individual bids, Currie and Patterson run the second and fourth legs, respectively, of the 4x100m relay team that qualified with a third-place 44.55 performance. They are joined by Lajarsha Moses and Ebonie Cunningham in the event.

Currie and Patterson also traveled to the championship in 2006 as members of the 4x100m team, finishing with 13th-place performance.

On the field, All-Region honoree junior Pat Springs makes her third trip to nationals in the long jump after collecting an at-large berth. She finished seventh in the long jump at the East Regional with a 6.02m leap. After making an appearance in the 2006 championship as a member of the 4x100m relay team with Currie and Patterson, she finished 13th overall in the long jump last season.

Senior steeplechase standout Tsehaye Dagnachew also claimed an at-large bid to round out the Charlotte championship contingent after running a 10:35.61 3000m steeplechase at the regional, good for ninth place. Dagnachew contested the event at the 2006 championship, finishing 25th overall.

Charlotte sent six student-athletes to the national championship last season, with standout sprinter Shareese Woods claiming sixth place and All-America honors in the 200m dash.

Please note: Due to unforseen errors in the selection process, Patterson was awarded an at-large bid by the NCAA the morning of Thursday, June 5.
