Philadelphia - Charlotte's Cassie Ficken was elected as Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year, and was joined on the Academic All-Conference team by triple jumper Sharonda Johnson. The league office made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon. The Academic All-Conference teams are selected in voting by the league's sports information offices.
Ficken heads the women's academic All-Conference team after qualifying for the NCAA Regionals in three events. She won the Atlantic 10 1,500 meter title, placed second in the 5,000-meters, and earned bronze as a member of the 49ers' 4x800-meter relay team.
During the indoor season, Ficken won the mile and the 3,000-meters at the A-10 Championship, Feb. 18. Last season, Ficken participated in the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, earning Indoor All-America honors in the 3,000-meters.
Cassie was also a member of the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Academic All-Conference team this fall. She was also the 2005 Conference USA Indoor Track Co-Student-Athlete of the Year.
Ficken maintains a 4.00 grade point average in Charlotte's masters program in civil engineering.
Sharonda Johnson joined Ficken on the Academic All-Conference team. She was the A-10's outdoor triple jump champion and posted third-place medalist performances in the long and high jumps to score 22 points toward Charlotte's team championship. Ranked 34th nationally in the triple jump, Johnson posted a NCAA Regional qualifying mark in her first meet back this spring following a year-long layoff due to knee surgery.
Johnson, a chemistry major, has a 3.876 GPA. She was the 2005 Arthur Ashe National Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and earned Academic All-America honors in 2004.
Both Ficken and Sharonda Johnson are candidates for Academic All-District, which is a precursor for Academic All-America. Voting in the Academic All-District competition begins soon.
