Will Montgomery on C-USA Men's Outdoor Track All-Decade Team

Three-time C-USA Champion, Two-time All-American honored

May 10, 2005

Irving, Texas and Charlotte, N.C. - Former Charlotte great Will Montgomery was elected to the Conference USA Men's Outdoor Track & Field All-Decade Team, it was announced on Tuesday. C-USA is celebrating its 10th anniversary during the 2004-05 season and in conjunction, the league is naming a Team of the Decade for each of the conference's 19 sports.

Montgomery earned his spot on the All-Decade team in voting by each of the league's current men's track & field coaches. A two-time outdoor All-American in the long jump (2001, 2002), Montgomery posted three Conference USA Championships and had two runner-up performances during his career with the 49ers. He also qualified for the NCAA's in the high jump during the 2000 season.

Montgomery won the long jump in three of his four seasons, taking the C-USA title in 1999, 2001, and 2002. He was the runner-up in 2000, and also earned second in the triple jump in 2002. He is the only three-time long jump champion in league history, and is one of only six athletes in C-USA history to earn three titles in the same event during a career.

Montgomery, who won the C-USA long jump title in his first year of competition, was chosen as the league's Freshman of the Year in 1999. He went on to earn USA Track & Field Junior All-American status that year.

A three-time team MVP, Montgomery led the 49ers to best-ever fourth place finishes at the 2001 and 2002 C-USA Outdoor Championships. He is the school record holder in the long and high jumps and ranks second on the all-time triple jump list.

Montgomery's honor gives the Charlotte men's program at least one athlete on each of the three teams announced this year. Kenneth Svendsen was on the Indoor Track All-Decade team, and was joined by Vince Sherry to give the Niners two on the Men's Cross Country All-Decade team.
