49ers Win Three Atlantic 10 Track Weekly Awards

McCallum, Woods honored for the third time this season

April 24, 2006

Philadelphia - The Atlantic 10 Conference announced Monday afternoon that Charlotte's Ben McCallum and Shareese Woods earned Outdoor Track Performer of the Week honors, while freshman Pat Springs was the league's Rookie of the Week.

McCallum and Woods, who shared this week's award with La Salle's Rachel Papin, were each honored as Performer of the Week for the third time this outdoor season.

Springs, who was named Co-Rookie of the Week along with Jordan Veney of UMass, won that award for the second time this outdoor season after also capturing two Rookie awards during indoor season.

Ben McCallum, a senior from Rockingham, N.C. (East Bladen HS), posted times of 10.67 (100m) and 21.26 (200m) on Apr. 22 at the Murray Neely Invitational at North Carolina A & T. He also ran a leg of the 4x100m relay (40.89). While none of the times were season-bests for McCallum, each of them would rank among the top five in the A-10 this season. The 4x100 relay time would still be the fastest in the league.

Shareese Woods, a junior from Fort Lee, Va. (Prince George HS) was the top collegiate finisher in both the 200m (23.58) and 400m (52.93) dashes on Apr. 22 at the Murray Neely Invitational at North Carolina A & T. Both times qualified her for the NCAA Regionals, while her 400 time was a season best. Her 400 time run on Saturday puts her tied for 13th nationally. She previously ran the 12th-fastest time in the nation in the 200.

Pat Springs, a freshman from Winston-Salem, N.C. (Mount Tabor HS) finished second in the long jump on Apr. 22 at Georgia's Bulldog Limited Meet with a mark of 19 feet, 3.25 inches. That mark places her sixth all-time at Charlotte. Pat also registered a time of 12.19 in the 100m dash, which will put her among the A-10 leaders this season.
