Johnson, McCallum Earn A-10 Track Performer of the Week Awards

April 10, 2006

Philadelphia - Charlotte 49ers Ben McCallum and Sharonda Johnson have been named Atlantic 10 Conference Outdoor Track Performers of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Johnson was the Women's Co-Performer of the Week, earning her second A-10 weekly award this outdoor season, while McCallum captured the men's award outright for his second A-10 outdoor weekly honor.

Ben McCallum (Rockingham, N.C./East Bladen HS) qualified for the NCAA Regionals in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes on Saturday at the Duke Invitational. McCallum clocked a time of 10.46 in the 100 dash, and had a new personal-best time in the 200 at 20.97 seconds. That time is second all-time at Charlotte behind All-American Derrick Johnson. He was the top collegiate finisher in both events, finishing second overall to unattached runners.

McCallum also ran on the second-place 4x100-meter relay that ran the eighth-best time in school history at 40.75.

McCallum's 100 time of 10.46 would have ranked him 19th in the nation as of last week's descending order list. He already ranks ninth nationally in the 200 with a time of 20.90. This week's time of 20.97 would have been a national top-10 time as well according to last week's rankings.

Sharonda Johnson (Raleigh, N.C./Southeast Raleigh HS) posted her season-best distance in the triple jump, and once again qualified for the NCAA East Regionals in that event. That is her third Regional qualifying mark in the triple jump this outdoor season, as she continues to rebound from an injury that held her out of competition for a full year.

Johnson's distance of 42 feet, 4.75 inches (12.92 meters) was good for second place at the Duke Invitational. That distance leads the A-10 and would have ranked Sharonda ninth as of last week's national descending order list and would have put her sixth in a very deep East Region.

Sharonda was also Co-Performer of the Week on March 20, the first week the award was given out during outdoor season. That week, she posted her first NCAA Regional qualification of the season in the triple jump, in her first competitive meet in over a year following surgery.
