49ers To Retire Molly Kerin's Jersey Saturday

Kerin was a three-time All-American for Charlotte's cross country and track teams.

Jan. 21, 2004

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - This Saturday, Jan. 24, the Charlotte 49ers Athletic Department will retire the jersey of former women's cross country and track athlete Molly Kerin. The ceremony will take place at halftime of the men's basketball team's homecoming game against UAB, which begins at 3:00 in Halton Arena.

Kerin will become the first member of the 49ers' cross country and track teams to have her jersey retired. The jersey retirement is part of a reunion for all cross country and track and field athletes.

One of the most decorated student-athletes in 49ers history, Kerin was a three-time All-American at Charlotte from 1992-1995. She earned All-America honors in cross country in 1994 and 1995 and in track and field for the 3,000-meter run in 1995. She was the 1995 Conference USA Cross Country Athlete of the Year and was a three-time all-conference runner in cross country. She helped the 49ers to Metro Conference cross country championships is 1993 and 1994, finishing in the top five at the league championships both seasons. In 1995, she was the individual champion in the inaugural Conference USA Cross Country Championships. A three-time team MVP, Kerin owns the school's second-fastest time in cross country (17:15 in the 5K) and four of the school's top 10 times. She still holds the school record in outdoor track's 5,000-meter run (16:38.94).

To be eligible for jersey retirement, a 49ers student-athlete must graduate, be named All-America or conference player of the year, have enjoyed team success during his or her career and exhibit strong character. In addition, multiple all-conference selections, all-region or district honors and academic honors can be considered.

To date, 15 other student-athletes have had their jerseys retired by the Charlotte 49ers. Kerin will join Byron Dinkins, Charles Hayward, DeMarco Johnson, Jarvis Lang, Cedric Maxwell, Melvin Watkins and Henry Williams from men's basketball, women's basketball's Paula Bennett and Kristin Wilson, baseball's Joey Anderson, Tim Collie and Barry Shifflett, and men's soccer's Gabe Garcia, Aidan Heaney and Randy Sheen.
