Charlotte Track and Field Returns to Action at Two Indoor Meets

Niners Send Teams to North Carolina and Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech Results

Jan. 14, 2007

Chapel Hill, N.C. & Blacksburg, Va. - The Charlotte 49ers Track and Field teams sent competitors to two ACC schools this weekend to get the 2007 indoor season started.

At Virginia Tech, Shareese Woods took home the 200m run with a finals time of 23.65 seconds, a school record and one one-thousandth of a second over the second-place runner. Woods' time was a provisional qualifying time. Lamarra Currie was seventh in those finals, with Lajarsha Moses 13th overall.

Woods finished second in the 55m run finals with a 6.89 time, while Currie ran fifth in the finals at 7.08 seconds. Woods ran a preliminary dash time of 6.85, which was another NCAA provisional qualifying time and a school record.

Shareese had a fantastic meet coming off the winter break," said head coach Bob Olesen.
"She's traditionally a longer sprinter but success last year outdoor in the 100m and 200m prompted Coach Tim Hall to try her in the 55m and 200m at Virginia Tech and she didn't disappoint with school records, and national qualifying performances. She's set a great tone for what looks to be a very fruitful senior indoor season."

Pat Springs took home honors in the women's long jump, with a personal-best finals jump of 6.11m, the only participant to cross the six-meter distance. She was one centimeter beyond the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Tayesha Gass-Gray finished fifth at 5.85 meters.

Springs ran an 8.34in the women's 55m hurdles.

"Pat had the best long jump meet of her life so far not only winning with a personal best but also showing great consistency in the distance of her jumps," said Olesen.
"We've got some technical issues to work on as she adjusts to her improving sprint speed that will hopefully get her the extra 20 cm or so she will need to make the cut into the NCAA Championships."

Both Moses and Lamarra Currie ran career-best 7.00 times in the 55-meter dash in preliminary runs.

Jelaine Sellers leaped a 1.65m in the women's high jump, good enough for eighth place.

Sharonda Johnson was fourth in the women's triple jump at 12.60 meters, just five cm from a provisional qualifying jump, and Lindsay Clayborn landed 11th with a 11.78-meter distance.

"Sharonda's got some big jumps coming as she continues to adjust to a change in her triple jump style we're making this year," said Olesen.

Freshman Danielle Brown recorded a personal-best 11.56m in the triple jump, which is the best for a freshman in the Atlantic 10 so far this season.

The 4x400m relay team of Ayana Wise, Shareese Woods, Tina Horne and Angel Moore finished fifth with a time of 3:46.56, which was the second-best time in school history.

In the women's weight throw, Ashley Wiley threw a distance of 14.13m, narrowly missing the school record by 6 cm.

"Ashley has plenty of distance left to tap into in the coming weeks," said Olesen.

On the men's side, Jason Moore was four-hundredths of a second from winning the 55 meter dash, with a 6.31 seconds time in the finals. He was also second in the 200m dash, just six-thousandths behind the winner, with a time of 21.40 seconds.

LaMarcus Outing finished fifth in the men's long jump, with a leap of 7.08 meters. Sean Patterson was also fifth in the triple jump, at 14.88 meters.

Lloyd LeBlanc turned in an 11th place finish in the 500m dash, with a school-record time of 1:05, and was 12th in the 400m sprint with a time of 49.76 seconds.

"We don't get the chance to run the 500m often, especially in this part of the country so Lloyd did a great job of taking advantage of the opportunity to lower the record and should occupy a spot at or near the top of this week's conference rankings."

At Chapel Hill, Charlotte saw Courtney Patterson, Toree Roseboro and Tempess Stark all qualify for the finals in the 60-meter dash, with Roseboro finishing ninth, Patterson 10th and Stark 15th in the final run.

Patterson was the only non-North Carolina runner in the top eight, finishing fourth in the 200m run. Roseboro finished 10th in that event.

Charlotte's 4x400m team of LaDrea Dortch, Patterson, Stark and Karmel Stapleton finished ninth in that team event.

"We had a very successful weekend coming off the winter break with nearly everyone at or beyond where we left off at our pre-break meets and look forward to testing ourselves against some top teams at the Clemson Invitational this coming weekend," said Olesen.

The Niners will compete again next weekend at the Clemson Indoor Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
