Cross Country, Track Reunion Set For This Weekend

The 49ers will retire the jersey of former cross country / track and field standout Molly Kerin during halftime of Saturday's men's basketball game versus UAB.

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers will recognize its first cross-country/track and field athlete, Molly Kerin, in its jersey retirement program in a halftime ceremony during the men's basketball homecoming game vs. UAB, Jan. 24.

In addition, the 49ers are hosting a reunion for all cross-country and track and field athletes, that weekend. For more information on the reunion or to reserve your spot, please call 704/687-4955.

Kerin is a three-time all-America, who earned all-America honors in cross-country in 1994 and 1995 and in track and field in the 3,000 meters in 1995. Kerin was the 1995 Conference USA Cross-Country Athlete of the Year and was a three-time all-conference runner in cross-country. She helped the 49ers to Metro Conference cross-country championships is 1993 and 1994, finishing in the top five in the league meet, both years. In 1995, she was the individual champion in the inaugural Conference USA cross-country championships. A three-time team MVP, Kerin owns the school's second fastest time in cross-country (17:15 in the 5K) and four of the school's top 10 times. She still holds the school record in outdoor track's 5,000 meters (16:38.94).

The reunion activites begin with a welcome back dinner, Friday night, Jan. 23. A tour of the athletic facilities will take place Saturday morning, Jan. 24. The Homecoming game vs. UAB begins at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, with a halftime ceremony recognizing Kerin. A dinner is planned for 5:30, Saturday evening and a breakfast will be held Sunday morning with the current team and coaching staff.

Other 49er athletes whose jerseys have been retired are men's basketball's Byron Dinkins, DeMarco Johnson, Jarvis Lang, Melvin Watkins, Cedric Maxwell, Henry Williams and Charles Hayward; baseball's Barry Shifflett, Tim Collie and Joey Anderson; women's basketball's Paula Bennett and Kristin Wilson and men's soccer's Gabe Garcia, Randy Sheen and Aidan Heaney.
