PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Charlotte 49ers' Will Montgomery and Michelle Dixon each recorded sixth-place finishes in events at this weekend's USA Track and Field Championships at Stanford. Montgomery was sixth in the long jump for seniors, while Dixon was sixth in the 100-meter dash for juniors.
Montgomery, who recently finished his collegiate career with his third All-America citation, recorded a distance of 24'9" to earn the school's highest finish ever at a national meet. With his performance, he qualifies for the USA National Team when they compete against the Caribbean and Central America at a meet to be held in San Antonio this August. The team will be comprised of athletes ages 20-24.
Dixon, who competed as a freshman for Charlotte this season, turned in a time of 11.75. It is her third-fastest time this season. She qualified for the finals with a time of 11.95 in the preliminaries.
The pair was also joined by teammates at the meets. Derrick Johnson competed for the men, while Bernadette Washington and Cassie Ficken competed for the women. Johnson ran in the prelims of the 100 as well as the prelims and semifinals of the 200. Washington also ran in the 100 and 200 meters. Ficken ran in the 5,000-meter run, finishing 13th.
