Women's Track Completes Competition at NCAA Championships

School Record Six 49ers Women Finish Up Season on National Stage

June 13, 2008

Des Moines, Iowa - The Charlotte 49ers women's track and field team sent a school-record six individuals to the 2008 NCAA Track and Field Championships, held June 11-14. The 49ers sent senior Courtney Patterson (Fayetteville, N.C.) and junior Lamarra Currie (Apex, N.C.) to compete in the 100 meter dash, senior Tsehaye Dagnachew (Jacksonville, N.C.) in the 3000 meter steeplechase, junior Pat Springs (Winston-Salem, N.C.) in the long jump and the 4x100 relay team of Patterson, Currie, senior Lajarsha Moses (Fayetteville, N.c.) and freshman Ebonie Cunningham (Raleigh, N.C.).

Each competed in Wednesday's qualifying action but none advanced to the event finals.

Springs posted the best result, leaping 6.31 meters to place 13th in qualifying, one spot from advancing to the finals.

The 4x100 relay team placed 17th with a time of 45.19 while Patterson finished 26th in the 100 meter dash at 12.15 and Currie place 30th at 12.23. Dagnachew pulled up in the steeplechase competition and was unable to finish.

The six competitors sent to the NCAA Championships matches the school record sent in 2006 when the 49ers were also represented by the 4x100 relay team (Springs, Patterson, Currie and Shareese Woods) as well as Dagnachew (3000 steeplechase) and Cassie Ficken (5,000 meter). The five event results in 2008 is one shy of the school mark of six set in 2006 when the 49ers competed in the 4x100 relay, the 3000 meter steeplechase, the 5000 meter run as well as the 100 meter dash (Patterson and Woods) and the 200 meter dash (Woods).

Patterson (100 meters in 2006) and Dagnachew (3000 steeplechase in 2006) were making their second NCAA Championship appearances in individual events while both Springs and Currie had competed previously on the 4x100 relay team. Currie (100 meters) and Springs (long jump) were making their first appearances in individual events. As members of the 4x100 relay team, Moses and Cunningham were making their first NCAA Championship appearances.

Charlotte's women's track team has won all six Atlantic 10 titles (3 indoor and 3 outdoor) since joining the league three years ago.
