Sacramento, Calif. - Senior sprinter Shareese Woods, already an All-American in the 200m from the indoor season, made it through preliminary and semifinal heats today to advance to the finals of the 200m dash Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Sacramento State University.
Woods turned in a school-record time of 23.04 seconds in the 200m in heat four of the preliminary rounds. She was second in her heat and was eighth overall in that round to advance to the semifinal round later in the afternoon.
After some rest, Woods finished third in the first semifinal heat, with an improved time and another school-record mark of 22.84 seconds, good enough for fifth-best among all competitors in the semifinal round.
"It went perfectly," said Niners head coach Bob Olesen.
"We couldn't have asked for more from her today. She broke the school-record in the preliminaries, came back an hour and a half later and broke it again. She could be right there in a very tough final, which will be live on CBS. She feels the best she's ever felt in a Championship situation, so coming from a veteran, that confidence is great."
Woods and the other eight finalists will take to the track on Saturday at 1:44 EDT for the finals of the event.
Friday, the final Niners competitor will begin qualifying as senior Sharonda Johnson will start in the opening rounds of the triple jump at her second Outdoor Championship meet, beginning at 7:00 p.m. EDT
