CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women, who claimed Conference USA titles in the high jump and long jump on Friday, landed three point scorers in the triple jump on Saturday's final day of competition to earn a tie for sixth-place at the 2003 C-USA Track and Field Championships. The 49ers men, who relied on its sprinter's corp for the majority of its points, placed ninth.

Senior Amber Reddick, who won the women's long jump on Friday, placed third in the triple jump (12.12m)to lead three Niners in scoring in the event. Rolanda Gabriel placed fifth (12.09) and Sharonda Johnson was seventh (11.93) as Charlotte picked up 12 points in the event.

Fellow senior Aisha Thomas placed third in the 400 meter dash with a school-record 53.84 to improve her NCAA Regional qualifying mark.

The 54.5 points scored by the women are the most the 49ers have totalled in the C-USA Outdoor Championships and the sicth-place finish is also the program's best in C-USA.

On the men's side, Charlotte scored 55 points, thanks to a sprint team that produced a third-place finish in the 4x400 relay, a seventh-place finish in the 4x100 relay, Adam Evans' fourth-place finish in the 400 meters and Twann Atkins fifth-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles. In addition, Abe Morlu was runner-up in the triple jump. Each of those individuals posted NCAA Regional qualifying marks in their events, as did the 4x400 meter relay team which set a new school record at 3.09.50.

In addition, Josh Baker placed second (14:42.30) in the 5000 meters with teammate Ed Schlicter finishing eighth. John Okonkwo finished seventh in the high jump, Russell Slade was eighth in the 1500 meters and Eli Sundquist was seventh in the triple jump.

 

 

TCU won the men's event while South Florida claimed its first-ever C-USA women's title.
