LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Charlotte 49ers track and field teams wrapped up their weekend at the Conference USA Championships, Saturday afternoon at Louisville. Sharonda Johnson led the 49ers on the final day, winning the triple jump.
Charlotte's men placed eighth overall with 50 points, while the women were 10th with 42.66 points. Cincinnati claimed the men's title with 159.5 points. Houston scored 121 points to claim the women's title.
Johnson won the triple jump with a distance of 42-5.5. It is her second-straight C-USA championship. During the indoor season, she won in the same event at the league championships in Houston.
The 49ers also had a pair of freshmen score in sprints on Saturday. Shareese Woods was fourth in the 400 with a time of 55.21 seconds. Tempess Stark posted a time of 24.52 seconds to take fifth in the 200. Liz Smith rounded out the team's scoring effort, placing seventh in the 1,500 with a time of 4:42.64.
Ed Sclichter had the highest finish for the men's team on day three. He turned in a second-place showing in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:40.80. It was the second runner-up finish for Schlichter at the C-USA Championships. He took second in the 10,000 on Thursday.
Eli Sunquist also earned All-Conference USA honors on Saturday, finishing third in the triple jump with a distance of 49-5.75. Sean Patterson also scored for the Niners in the triple jump, placing sixth.
In the running events, Riaan Lourens followed his top time in the prelims of the 800 with a fifth-place finish. He posted a time of 1:53.08. Montray Gilchrist and Sean Williams both scored in the 110-meter hurdles. Gilchrist was seventh with a time of 14.81, while Williams took eighth with a time of 15.09. Charlotte's men also finished fifth in both 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.
