CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Ed Schlichter's third-place finish in the 10,000-meter run paced the 49ers on day one of the 2003 Conference USA Track and Field Championship. His run came in the final event of the day, which was delayed one hour, 45 minutes due to lightning.

Schlichter remained among the leaders throughout the race, swapping the lead several times with eventual winner Adam Chumbley of South Florida and runner-up Brent Des Roches from Marquette. Schlichter's time of 31:16.40 was the best for the 49ers this season. Chumbley turned in a time of 31:01.73, while Des Roches ran a 31:11.30.

After day one of the championship, DePaul leads the men's standings with 16 points through two events. For the women, South Florida leads after two events with 23 points.

Day two begins at 9:00 Friday with the conclusion of the heptathlon and decathlon. Field events pick up again at 2:00 with the women's discus. Running events begin at 4:30 with the prelims for the women's 1,500-meter run.
