Dagnachew Leads Niners On Day Two Of C-USA Championships

Charlotte's men are in sixth place through Friday, while the women are ninth.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tsehaye Dagnachew finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead the Charlotte 49ers' track and field teams on the second day of the Conference USA Championhips. The championships conclude on Saturday.

The women are in ninth place through two days of the league championships with 15 points. USF leads the women's competition with 38 points. Charlotte's men dropped one spot to sixth on Friday with 18 points. Cincinnati leads the men's competition with 34 points.

Dagnachew turned in a time of 10:52.45, an NCAA regional qualifying mark. She earned All-Conference USA notice by finishing in the top three. Tayesha Gass-Gray and Adrienne Lunsford both scored for the 49ers in the long jump. Gass-Gray was fourth in the event with a distance of 18-11.75. Lunsford placed seventh with a distance of 18-7.25.

Riaan Lourens had the strongest showing for the men's team. He led all competitors in the prelims of the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.19. Brad Bailey posted the highest finish for the men on Friday, placing fourth in the decathlon with 6,646 points. Verun Tahiliani also scored for Charlotte. He was fifth in the steeplechase with a time of 9:21.83.

The Conference USA Championhips close Saturday with finals in most running events and several field events.
