Houston, Texas - On Saturday night, sophomore Tsehaye Dagnachew earned Charlotte's first championship at the 2005 Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, while senior Brad Bailey posted a runner-up finish. The 49er men finished day two in fifth place with 25 points.

Along with Ed Schlichter's runner-up performance in the 10,000-meter run on Thursday night, Charlotte now has three All-Conference USA awardwinners. The bulk of the meet's event finals will be held on Saturday.

Dagnachew won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a NCAA East Regional qualifying time of 10:21.18 to again shatter the school's record by nearly 13 seconds. The sophomore earned 10 points for the Charlotte women in the team competition. It was the second All-Conference steeplechase honor for Dagnachew, who had finished second in this event last year as a freshman.

Brad Bailey earned another All-Conference USA award, finishing second in the decathlon with 6,928 points to shatter his own school record.

Bailey, in third place entering the second day of the ten-event competition, improved to earn his best-ever finish at the C-USA Championships. The senior had placed fourth and third in the event the last two years.

Shareese Woods had the second-fastest women's 200-meter dash prelim time, shattering the school record and qualifying for the East Regionals at a blazing 23.50. The sophomore then came back to qualify for the 400-meter dash finals, again qualifying for the NCAA Regional with a time of 54.30.

Derrick Johnson and Quincy Smith each advanced to the men's 100 meter dash championship, to be held on Saturday. During Friday's preliminary heats, Johnson posted the fourth-fastest time overall (10.49) while Smith was just behind at 10.56. Johnson's time was a NCAA East Regional qualifying mark.

In the men's 200 dash, Johnson and teammate Benjamin McCallum qualified for Saturday's championship, while Quincy Smith narrowly missed with an 11th-place finish. Johnson had the third-best time in prelims, a NCAA Regional-qualifying 20.71, while McCallum also qualified for NCAA's with a time of 21.18.

Kevin Ryan finished sixth in the decathlon to give Charlotte three more points in that event.

In the men's 400, James Bacon moved through to Saturday's championship with a time of 47.94.

Alex Stewart scored in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, notching a point with an eighth-place showing.

In the men's 110-meter high hurdle preliminaries, Montray Gilchrist clocked a 14.53 to move through to Saturday's final.

LaMarcus Outing finished seventh in the men's long jump finals to score two points for Charlotte. He finished with a distance of 7.22 meters (23-feet, 8.25-inches).

In the women's 100-meter dash preliminary round, Tempess Stark moved through to the finals with a NCAA East Regional qualifying and personal best time of 11.72.

Cassie Ficken, the C-USA Indoor Athlete of the Year, qualified for Saturday's 1,500-meter Championship with a preliminary round time of 4:44.38. Teammate Summer Graham joins her in the race, qualifying with a time of 4:55.81.

Paris Smith qualified for the women's 100-meter hurdles final, to be held Saturday. She ran 14.41 in the preliminary round, the fifth-best time in school history.

Adrienne Barnette, who won the high jump title during the league's indoor championship, finished fourth on Friday night. She again cleared a NCAA Regional-qualifying height of 5-feet, 8.75 inches. Barnette earned another five points for the women's team.
