LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Charlotte 49ers men's track and field team was unable to build on yesterday's success and went on to finish fourth at the Conference USA Championships Saturday at Louisville. The men finished the meet with 79 points. The women's team finished 12th with 29 points.
TCU won the men's competition with 132.5 points, followed by Cincinnati (123) and Houston (97.5). On the women's side, Houston captured the title with 144 points. Marquette was second (119) points and South Florida was third (85.5).
Derrick Johnson led the men's team on the final day, finishing second in both the 100- and 200-meter dash to earn C-USA Freshman of the Year honors. One day after posting NCAA qualifying marks in both events, Johnson turned wind aided times of 10.20 and 20.55, respectively. Will Montgomery followed Friday's win in the long jump with a runner-up showing in the triple jump. He covered a distance of 50'5.5", the 49ers' best mark of the season. Matt Rausch was third in the discus with a throw of 163'8". His throw was more than two feet better than his previous school record.
Rolanda Gabriel led the women's team on the third day. She placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 39'6". Michelle Dixon also scored for the Niners, placing fifth in the 100 meters with time of 11.65.
