Charlotte, N.C. - With strong showings in the field events that dominated the first day of the 2006 Atlantic 10 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Center, Rhode Island holds first place in both the men's and women's competition.

On the men's side, the Rams piled up points in the field events, with event titles in the high jump, pole vault and hammer throw. Rhode Island leads the competition with 91 points after nine events. La Salle is second at 65 points followed by Duquesne (55.3) and Charlotte (54).

In both the pole vault and the hammer, Rams competitors finished first, second and fourth. Sean Strizzi led the pole vaulters with his championship vault of 4.90 meters while Michael Bernardo led the high-scoring Rams in the hammer with an NCAA Regional qualifying throw of 55.61 meters. Evan Lima won the high jump for the Rams with a leap of 1.99 meters. Rhode Island also had the 3-4-5 finishers in the javelin and the 2-4-6 finishers in the discus.

La Salle, which excels in the distance events, is in second-place after Sean Quigley claimed the title in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 30:59.18 and its 4x800 relay team took first place with a time of 7:31.05. Explorer Kevin Moore won the javelin with an NCAA qualifying mark of 66.67 meters.

Duquesne's Tom Slosky won the 3000 meter steeplechase with an NCAA qualifying time of 9:04.17. Charlotte's LaMarcus Outing led the 49ers with his individual title in the long jump, posting a new A-10 Championship record of 7.50 meters.

On the strength of individual championships in the 10,000 meter run and the discus throw and proven depth in the throwing events, Rhode Island's women also took over first place after the first day of competition.

After the completion of nine events, Rhode Island has 72.25 points to take a small lead over second place Charlotte (67 points). Duquesne is third with 50 points and Richmond is fourth with 45 points.

Rhode Island's Cindy Smith won the 10,000 meter run with an A-10 championship record of 36:56.65, but it was the Rams strength in the throws that staked them to their lead. Sarah Thornton won the discus and finished second in the hammer. Overall, the Rams had three of the top six finishers in the discus, two of the top six in the hammer and three of the top eight in the javelin, totalling 40 points in those events.

Charlotte was led by event titles in the 3000 meter steeplechase and long jump. Junior Tsehaye Dagnachew set an Atlantic 10 Championship record in the steeplechase of 10:32.11 and freshman Pat Springs won the long jump at 5.90 meters.
