Rausch Wins Shot Put, Hammer At Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA - Highlighted by wins from Matt Rausch in the shot put and hammer, the Charlotte 49ers competed at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia this past weekend. In addition to the two wins, the Niners posted a pair of NCAA qualifying marks and broke four school records.

Rausch won the shot put with a school record throw of 57'1". He won the hammer as well with a throw of 198'10", which was also a good for a school record. Kenneth Svendsen was second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:58.61, good enough to qualify provisionally for NCAAs and lower the school mark. Vince Sherry also posted a provisional qualifying mark in the 5,000, finishing eighth with a 14:04.24 time.

Jen Taylor led the women's team, setting a school record in the 3,000-meter run. She finished fifth with a time of 9:39.74, naerly 10 seconds faster than the previous school record.

This weekend, Charlotte will compete at the Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., before going to the C-USA Championships in South Florida the following weekend.
