49ers Performing Well at Penn Relays

Charlotte vying for three titles on Saturday.

April 28-29, 2005

Philadelphia, Pa. - Several Charlotte 49ers turned in impressive showings Thursday and Friday against heady competition at the 2005 Penn Relays held here at Franklin Field. The prestigious event continues with the finals of many events on Saturday, where Charlotte will have at least three entries vying for titles.

Senior Derrick Johnson won the third head of the college men's 100 meter dash on Friday afternoon, clocking in at 10.64. His time was the fourth-best overall during the opening round of competition. He advances to the 100 dash Championship, to be completed on Saturday at 4:00, and will race in lane six.

The women's 4x400 meter relay team finished fifth in their heat, with a time of 3:45.57. They were one of 10 schools to move on to the college Championship, to be contested on Saturday afternoon.

The men's 4x100 team finished third in their heat of the race, clocking in at 41.08. They join nine other schools in Saturday's Championship final.

Adrienne Barnette won the college division of the high jump on Thursday morning, which qualified her for the open division competition on Friday.

Barnette matched her NCAA East Regional-qualifying mark from earlier this year. She cleared 1.76 meters (5 feet, 9.25 inches) and beat out Florida International's Linda Louissaint by taking fewer attempts to clear the height.

Cassie Ficken finished seventh in the women's 5,000 meter Championship on Thursday night. She clocked a time of 16:43.12. For a majority of the race, Ficken was one of two runners leading the chase pack behind leader Mary Cullen of Providence.

Tsehaye Dagnachew finished fifth in the College Women's Steeplechase Championship on Thursday night, finishing with a time of 10:36.61. That is just over five seconds off of first place and again qualifies her for the NCAA East Regional. She broke the school record in this event earlier this season.

Barnette qualified for Friday's College Women High Jump Championship, and was one of nine competitors in that event. She did not clear a height Friday.

Charlotte competed in the women's 4x1500 meter relay Championship on Friday, finishing ninth. The team consisted of Jane Daniels, Tsehaye Dagnachew, Liz Smith, and Cassie Ficken.

The Charlotte men were sixth in their heat of the 4x400 relay, finishing in 3:18.84.

LaMarcus Outing finished 12th in the college men's long jump competition, leaping 6.89 meters (22 feet, 7.25 inches) on Friday.

Ed Schlichter competed in the men's 5,000-meter run Championship section on Friday.
