Record-Breaking Weekend Nets Ten Regional Qualifications

49ers match or break five school records on Saturday.

April 16, 2005

Knoxville, Tenn. - Competing at the 2005 Sea Ray Relays on the campus of the University of Tennessee, the Charlotte 49ers track & field teams posted nine more NCAA Regional qualifications on Saturday. That brings their weekend total to ten overall. Sophomore Shareese Woods was a four-time qualifier, helping break Charlotte school records in three events, while four other athletes each earned at least two qualifications.

Overall, the Niners matched or broke five school records on Saturday.

Woods qualified individually for the NCAA Regionals in the women's invitational 200-meter dash. She finished ninth overall with a time of 23.75, which matches the school record she set earlier this season.

The sophomore also qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the 400-meter dash, where she clocked in at 53.85. That is just off the all-time Charlotte mark.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team finished fifth in a school-record time. Tawana Norman, Missy Philogene, Tempess Stark and Shareese Woods combined to post a Regional-qualifying time of 45.41. That lowers the foursome's school record, established earlier this season, by another 0.16 seconds.

Woods also ran on the school record-breaking and Regional-qualifying 4x400-meter relay. The team of Woods, Tina Horne, Angel Moore, and Carlitha Sturdivant finished 11th overall, clocking in at 3:40.41. that betters the previous all-time Charlotte best by nearly two-and-a-half seconds.

The men's 4x100 team of Derrick Johnson, Benjamin McCallum, Jason Moore, and Quincy Smith matched the women with a fifth-place showing, and also qualified for Regionals in a time of 40.23.

In the men's invitational 200 meter dash, senior Derrick Johnson was third overall and was the second collegiate finisher. He clocked in at 20.91 to qualify for NCAA Regionals, finishing only behind All-American Rodney Martin of South Carolina and professional star LaShawn Merritt.

Johnson also qualified in the 100-meter dash, notching a 10.26. This marks the second straight year that "DJ" has qualified for the NCAA Regionals in both of these events. He posted three qualifying times at this meet.

Tawana Norman shattered the school record in the long jump, just as she did during indoor season. Norman was fifth overall, but was the second collegiate finisher, with a Regional-qualifying performance.

In her first outdoor season with Charlotte, the graduate student covered a distance of 6.28 meters (20-feet, 07.25-inches). That bettered the previous school mark by an astounding 8.25 inches and is the only jump in school history over 20 feet.

Norman also competed in the 100-meter dash invitational at the meet. She went straight from the 100 competition to the long jump pits, where she reeled off three straight school record performances in a row - improving her distance each time until the final mark of 6.28 meters. She finished fourth overall - behind two All-Americans and an Olympian.

Tsehaye Dagnachew won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase invitational, clocking in at a Regional-qualifying time of 10:34.70. Dagnachew bettered the school record for the second time this outdoor season, improving upon her previous-best time by nearly 11 seconds. She leads Conference USA in this event in 2005.

On Friday night, Adrienne Barnette qualified for NCAA Regionals in the high jump. Barnette once again made attempts at a new school record but could not clear the bar. That gave the Niners ten NCAA Regional qualifying distances or times at this meet.

Matching Norman with two qualifications were Quincy Smith and Jason Moore, who were a part of both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of James Bacon, James Hanna, Jason Moore, and Quincy Smith finished eighth overall, with a time of 3:12.65. That was the third-fastest time ever at Charlotte.

In all, Charlotte now has 15 individuals qualified for the East Regional in 12 different events. That is the most-ever for the school.
