Knoxville, Tenn. - Senior Brad Bailey finished fifth in the Scott Hartman Decathlon, as Day Two of the Sea Ray Relays wrapped up on Thursday night. The bulk of the meet's competition, which is being hosted by the University of Tennessee, begins on Friday morning.
Bailey, an All-Conference USA decathlete, finished with 6,702 points in the two-day, ten-event competition. He improved from seventh to fifth with his performances on the second day, and finished just 14 points off of his school record (set in 2003).
On day two, Bailey finished in a tie for second in the pole vault (4.45m, 14-07.25), just off his personal best. He was fourth in the 1,500 run, javelin throw, and discus throw. He finished fifth in the 110 high hurdles.
On Friday, the Charlotte senior was third in the shot put, fifth in the 100-dash, sixth in the long jump, and tied for sixth in the high jump.
The decathlon field was filled with top competitors. The winner was former Tennessee Volunteer Stephen Harris, who earned All-America distinction in the event in four consecutive outdoor seasons (2000-2003). Tennessee sophomore Chris Helwick, the Southeastern Conference runner-up in the event last outdoor season, finished second. The fourth-place finisher, Jacob Friess of Central Michigan, was the Mid-American Conference's Indoor Track Most Valuable Performer.
Helwick posted a provisional NCAA Regional qualifying point total.
The 39th Sea Ray Relays are being held Wednesday through Saturday at Tom Black Track on the University of Tennessee campus. The meet is not team scored. Tentatively, 1,350 men's and women's collegiate and postcollegiate competitors from 107 teams/affiliations are expected to compete.
Friday's schedule begins at 8:45 a.m. CST, with the women's hammer throw, and continues through the men's 10,000-meter run (8:30 p.m.) and men's hammer throw (9:20 p.m.).
