CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers wrapped up their first meet of the outdoor season on Saturday, the 49ers Classic at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center. The 49ers broke four school records and posted three NCAA regional qualifying marks during the three-day meet.
Two of the regional qualifying marks came from the women's team. Aisha Thomas posted a qualifying time in the 400 twice. First, she had a time of 54.97 in the prelims, then posted an even better one with a school-record time of 54.33 to win the event. Amber Reddick had the other mark for the 49ers in the long jump. She covered a distance of 19'5.5" and finished second overall.
The men's 400-meter dash proved to be the most heavily contested record of the meet with Adam Evans and James Bacon each breaking the previous top mark. Bacon initially broke the record in the prelims with a time of 47.93 seconds, but Evans came back in the finals to lower the mark with a time of 47.48 seconds and finished third. Bacon was fourth with a time of 47.65. The Niners also broke the school record in the 4x400, posting an NCAA qualifying time of 3:10.39. Brad Bailey was responsible for the other school record. He scored 6,457 points to win the decathlon.
