Sprint & Field Athletes Successful at Aggie Relays

Three qualify for East Regionals, three school marks broken

March 24-26, 2005

Results

Greensboro, N.C. - The 49ers sprint and field event athletes tested out the new track on North Carolina A&T's campus at the Aggie Relays this weekend, and in the process broke three school records and earned three qualifications to the NCAA East Regionals.

Adrienne Barnette, who competed at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships in the high jump, won the event at Aggie Relays. Barnette cleared a height of 1.75 meters (5-feet, 8.75-inches), which qualifies her to compete at the NCAA East Regional later this spring with a national berth on the line at that event.

In the men's 100-meter dash, Derrick Johnson qualified to compete at the NCAA Regionals. After posting the best time during the preliminary round, "DJ" ran better in the finals, clocking a 10.46 to qualify. He beat out assistant coach Tim Walls, who was second competing unattached, and former 49er great Abu Morlu, who finished third. James Hanna was the fourth Niner to compete in the event, finishing tenth overall.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team improved upon its NCAA East Regional-qualifying time from last weekend, again breaking the school record in the process. The team of Tawana Norman, Missy Philogene, Shareese Woods, and Tempess Stark ran 45.57 to finish second, just five hundredths of a second off of the winning time.

Three of those team members, Stark, Philogene, and Woods, also teamed with Carlitha Sturdivant in a school record-breaking 4x200-meter relay. That group finished third overall with a time of 1:37.64 for a new Charlotte all-time best, breaking the old mark by nearly four seconds.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Shareese Woods, Angel Moore, Tina Horne and Carlitha Sturdivant finished third overall, clocking in at 3:46.47.

In the women's 100-meter dash, four 49ers qualified for the finals including assistant coach Felicia Fant who competed unattached. She had the second-best time in qualifying and finished fourth in the finals. Missy Philogene was sixth in both prelims and the finals, while Tempess Stark and Lajarsha Moses finished 10th and 11th in the finals, respectively.

In the women's pole vault, Karina Murray and Sarah Morrison finished first and second overall. Tempess Stark was third in the women's triple jump, while Paris Smith finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. Samantha Hines was seventh in the women's long jump.

James Bacon finished seventh in the 400-meter dash, but improved upon his time from last weekend's event by clocking a 47.78.

Ryan Keziah finished fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles, finishing in 14.75, while Montray Gilchrist also advanced to the final and finished ninth overall.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Benjamin McCallum, Derrick Johnson, Jason Moore, and Quincy Smith finished first overall, clocking in at 40.83. The same group, with James Hanna replacing Moore, also competed in the 4x200-meter relay, breaking the school record in finishing first overall (1:24.91).

As on the women's side, Brad Bailey and Terry Watson finished one-two in the pole vault.

LaMarcus Outing won the long jump with a distance of 7.33 meters, while placing fifth in the triple jump. Eli Sunquist finished seventh in that event.

Matt Page was sixth in the shot put, while finishing eighth in the discus throw.
