BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Charlotte 49ers drew closer to wrapping up the indoor season and the start of the outdoor season last weekend, competing at the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet. Sharonda Johnson led the 49ers, posting her third NCAA provisional qualifying mark of the year in the triple jump.

Johnson won the event for Charlotte, covering a distance of 43-0.25. It was her best mark of the season, breaking her own school record. She also recorded a B standard for the Olympic Qualifying Trials, which is comparable to a provisional mark qualifying someone for the NCAA Championships. Paris Smith also posted a school record for the 49ers, placing sixth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.65 seconds.

Bola Oyegunwa led the men, placing third in the 400 meters with a time of 48.29 seconds. His time ranks second in the school record books. James Hanna and Eli Sunquist also posted marks strong enough to crack the 49ers' top five all-time. Hanna had a time of 48.90 in the 400, which ranks third. Sunquist covered a distance of 23-0.75 in the long jump to rank fourth.

The Niners open the outdoor season at home, March 18-20, when they host the 49ers Classic. Charlotte will find out Monday if Johnson earns a berth in the NCAA Indoor Championships. If successful, she would become the first member of the women's team to compete at NCAA Indoors.
