Track Teams Sixth After Day One Of C-USA Championships

Danielle Taylor, Ed Schlichter and the men's distance medley relay team earned all-conference honors on day one.

HOUSTON - Both of the Charlotte 49ers' track and field teams are sixth after day one of the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Houston. The two-day meet concludes Saturday.

The men's team is in sixth place with 21 points, but are just 11 back of first place Marquette's score of 32. Charlotte had their strongest showing in the distance medley relay, placing second with a time of 10:15.49. Ed Schlichter also earned all-conference honors for the men on Friday with his third-place finish in the 5,000 meters. He turned in a time of 15:11.09.

The 49ers also had several advance to Saturday's finals in several events. James Hanna (22.06) and Derrick Johnson (22.09) advanced to the finals in the 200-meter dash. Riaan Laurens will compete in the finals of the 800 after posting a 1:54.92 time and winning his heat in the prelims. Sean Williams, Montray Gilchrist and Derek Ross advanced in the 60-meter hurdles as well.

Charlotte's women earned a score of 17 on the first day. USF leads the meet after day one with 48.5 points. Danielle Taylor led the way, placing second in the pole vault with a height of 12-5.50. Freshmen Carlitha Sturdivant and Paris Smith both advanced to Saturday's finals in the 400 and 60-meter hurdles, respectively. Sturdivant posted a time of 56.99, while Smith had a time of 8.74 seconds.
