HOUSTON, Texas - For the first time since the inception of Conference USA five years ago, the league crowned a new men's indoor track champion. Charlotte held off a furious last-day challenge from four-time conference champion, Houston, to nail down its first C-USA Indoor Track and Field championship, which concluded Saturday at the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston.
"We're just really proud of our team," 49ers coach David Hall said afterward. "It was a total team effort. We scored in many different events and I'm just really proud of the guys. We had a goal coming in and I'm proud the team achieved that."
The 49ers finished off the Cougars with an impressive performance in the 3,000 meters-the second to last event of the day. The 49ers placed second, fourth and eighth. The Cougars last hope for its fifth straight title came to an end in the 4x400-meter relay, finishing second to Memphis, while Charlotte took third. The 49ers edged out the Cougars in points, 148-143.
Hall was unanimously selected as C-USA Coach of the Year for leading the Niners to the upset. His distance runner extraordinaire, Kenneth Svendsen, took the Athlete of the Year award after winning the 5,000 meters, finishing second in the mile (4:13.35) and the 3,000 meters (8:25.46) and anchoring the distance medley squad that finished fourth.
"I'm really excited about this meet," Svendsen said. "The Conference USA Championship is a very exciting thing to head into and you want to give everything for the team. I wanted to be very supportive and get the points we needed to win."
On the women's side, Charlotte finished sixth out of 11 teams with 42.5 points. South Florida claimed their second straight title, scoring 112.5 points.
