Track And Field Competes At Clemson

The 49ers will take this weekend off before travelling to Houston for the Conference USA Championships.

CLEMSON, S.C. - The team's final tune-up before next week's Conference USA Championships, Charlotte sent competitors from both the men's and women's team to Clemson for the Tiger Invitational this past weekend.

On the men's side, Derrick Johnson tied his own school record in the 60-meter dash, posting a time of 6.77 seconds in the prelims. He went on to place fifth in the finals. Johnson also finished second in the 200 with a time of 21.62. Riaan Lourens won the 800-meter run for the men at Clemson. His time of 1:54.81 was just short of his season-best. Lourens also competed in the distance medley relay, teaming up with Irvin Hunter, Alex Stewart and Mark Weems to win the event with a 10:28.36 time.

The 49ers had four women post runner-up finishes at Clemson. Sharonda Johnson was second in the triple jump with a distance of 41-5.25. Adrienne Barnette cleared a height of 5-6 to take second in the high jump. The other two second-place showings were by a pair of freshmen. Tempess Stark was the runner-up in the 60 meters with a time of 7.60 seconds, while Carlitha Sturdivant was second in the 400 with a 57.18 time.

Charlotte has this weekend off before returning to action at next week's Conference USA Championships.
