BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Charlotte 49ers broke 10 school records at this past weekend's Virginia Tech Pepsi Invitational. The men's team posted six new marks, while the women set four records.
The 49ers' sprinters led the way for the men, setting records in the 200- and 400-meter dash, the 60-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay. Koiyan Morlu got things started in the 200, finishing third overall with a time of 21.93. Adam Evans followed suit in the 400. He posted a time of 47.93 seconds to place sixth. Twann Atkins, who previously shared the record with teammate Brandon Isaac, broke the tie with a 7.95 time in the prelims and went on to finish eighth in the finals. Charlotte's relay team took fourth in the 4x400 with a time of 3:15.62. Distance runner Kenneth Svendsen finished second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:16.61. In the field events, Matt Rausch surpassed his own record in the shot put, finishing second with a 57' heave.
Aisha Thomas led the women's team, breaking records in the 60- and 400-meter dash. She posted a time of 7.62 in the 60 meter prelims and went on the finish 11th. In the 400, Thomas finished fourth overall with a time of 55.78. The women's relay team lowered the record in the 4x400 as well, placing eighth with a 3:56.54 time. Amber Reddick improved the school record in the triple jump, covering a distance of 40'00.50" to finish sixth.
Charlotte will take next weekend off before returning to action Feb. 23-24 at the Conference USA Indoor Championships in Houston.
