CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - One week after breaking the school record in the women's 4x400, Charlotte posted the second fastest time in school history to win the event at the Carolina Classic, this past weekend. On the men's side, Derrick Johnson won the 200 meters for the third weekend in a row.
The 49ers' team of Bernadette Washington, Shareese Woods, Paris Smith and Carlitha Sturdivant placed first in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:52.81. Their time was 2.5 seconds better than runner-up North Carolina. It was the second strong showing for the women, who broke the school record at Appalachian, Jan. 31. Pole vaulter also made run at her own school record. After just missing attempts of 12-0, she placed seventh with a height of 11-5.75.
Johnson also won an event for Charlotte, taking the 200-meter dash for the third week in a row with a time of 21.93 seconds. Riann Lourens moved to second on the Niners' all-time list in the 800-meter run with a third-place time of 1:54.62.
This weekend, Charlotte will prepare for the Conference USA Indoor Championships. They will return to Clemson for Tiger Invitational. It is the team's final meet before the league championships in Houston, Feb. 27-28.
