CLEMSON, S.C. - Will Montgomery posted an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the long jump to lead the Charlotte 49ers track and field team at this weekend's Tiger Classic. In addition to his effort, the 49ers broke four other school records.

Montgomery won the long jump with a leap of 25'10.25" to break the Charlotte and Clemson's Littlejohn Coliseum records. He is the first member of the 49ers to earn an automatic mark during the indoor season. It ranks first in the most recent Conference statistics and fifth nationally. Montgomery competed in the high jump as well, where he finished second after clearing a height of 6'7". Also on the men's side, Twann Atkins broke his own record in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.42 seconds to finish fifth.

The women's team did one better than the men, breaking three school records. Aisha Thomas set a new standard in the 200 meters with a time of 24.86 and finished third in the 55 meters with a 7.07 time. Monica Turner won the long jump, covering a distance of 19'3.25." Her mark surpassed the previous record that had stood for three years by 2.75."

The 49ers return to action Feb. 9-10, when they compete at Virginia Tech's Pepsi Invitational.
